It is the region’s financial, educational and transportation centre, with a population of over 500,000. The Harbor of Halifax was a naval town long before World War 11, and it is still the defining character and economy of the city. The British were first to develop Halifax, when founded in 1749, it was to act as the counter force against the French fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island.
In the 20th Century Halifax acted as a key supply and convoy harbor in the World Wars, but since that time its military importance has declined, however the Canadian navy ships do still dock here. Now the city has a new success reflected by its office blocks, giving the sense of a new commercial success. The town’s most significant sight is the old British fortress in the heart of the Citadel. Halifax is a place that retains a compact and bustling feel to the centre but is also appealing as a relaxing air which is a great escape from the industriousness on many cities.
