Calgary's history

The oil bonanza of the 1970’s enabled Calgary’s downtown skyscrapers to literally soar overnight. Calgary is a likeable and booming place for fun and business. There is the prestigious Glenbow Museum in the heart of Calgary which should not be missed. Also infamous for its annual Calgary Stampede, a popular cowboy carnival in which the whole community of the town and many tourists gather together in a boots-and-stetson image, that is still very much the way of life in the surrounding cattle country.

Fort Calgary is another infamous landmark to this incredible town, built in less than six weeks by the North West Mounted Police in 1875, and from that date remained in operation as a police post until 1914 when it was sold to the Canadian Pacific Railway. Period photographs show just how wild life used to be like in Calgary back in 1876. Close to the site of the Fort is the Deane House Historic Site and Restaurant, built in 1906 by Mountie supreme Superintendent Richard Deane. It used to be used as a boarding house and a stationmaster’s house.
