The practicalities of driving in Canada it is pretty much like driving in America, with one slight difference - distances are measured in kilometres and not miles as in America. Fuel here is a bit more expensive than America, but is still far cheaper than UK standards. Many of the provinces require dipped headlights to be used at all times in the day as well as night. At red traffic lights a right turn is allowed after stopping and checking the way is safe, everywhere in Canada except in Quebec. When arriving at multiple junctions the vehicle that has arrived first has the right of way; pedestrians are to be looked out for as they have the right of way at intersections without traffic lights. With regards to school buses, they are only allowed to be over taken when flashing amber lights; they must not be overtaken when flashing red lights. When hiring a car in Canada check with reservations, you are allowed to cross the border into America, but the vehicle will need to be dropped back off in the country of pick up. Be alert for animals crossing the roads at any time, especially in forested areas which are inhabited by moose.
